Sydney’s ageing population

In May 2019, we partnered with the Committee for Sydney and Stockland, releasing a report finding that urgent attention must be given to public investment to support senior citizens in Sydney due to the lack of housing, transport and access to healthcare to meet the needs of a rapidly ageing population.

The report, Dignity and Choice: An inclusive future for our ageing population identifies the key challenges that need to be overcome to ensure Sydney remains inclusive and accessible for our senior population.

The report also contains over 30 different recommendations for federal, state and local governments to help policymakers prepare for a future where one-quarter of the population will be aged 65 or over, and 15% of the population will be aged 75 by 2056.

“There are few things so fundamental in life as feeling secure in your own home; this is true for us all, and especially so for older people. Many older Australians live dangerously close to the poverty line, at risk of losing their home, or in a home that no longer accommodates their changing needs,” said Mike Furner, BaptistCare’s General Manager Housing and Retirement Living.

Lifeyourstyle at The Gracewood Community

The third and final stage of The Gracewood Community commenced in September 2018, with the final 88 apartments under construction, as well as a range of new community facilities including a putting green, fire pit, bocce court and outdoor trellis dining areas.

This final stage will bring the independent living community to a total of 241 apartments.

Since October, the sales and marketing activity for The Gracewood Community has delivered a distinctive direction, with a special ‘lifeyourstyle’ film starring current residents.

Together with the positive word of mouth and support of these residents, our last stage has successfully sold well over half of the new apartments on offer.

Our final stage will open in May 2020 and completes The Gracewood Community, which comprises The Gracewood retirement living community, BaptistCare at home and residential home, The Gracewood Centre.

Maranoa Village grows

Our retirement village in northern NSW began the first of a five stage redevelopment, with construction commencing on 12 new units in August 2018.

The units were built, sold and new residents began moving in during March 2019, just after construction finished.

The extension to BaptistCare Maranoa Village caters for the increasing demand in the Northern Rivers for senior’s retirement living housing.

The second stage of the redevelopment will see another 15 units built, with completion expected towards the end of 2020.
